Learning Objectives

By the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

  • Clarify and state the role of spirometry as an objective measurement of lung disease
  • Review spirometry testing, terms and measurements
  • Identify the criteria for best test acceptability/repeatability
  • Gain confidence in the interpretation of spirometry through case study practice

Spirometry Ins and Outs

Kathleen Frame (RRT) has been a Respiratory Therapist for the past 21 years. She holds a Masters Degree in respiratory science and is a certified respiratory educator (CRE) and is currently the RT Case Manager for the INSPIRED project at the University Health Network – Toronto Western Hospital site. She is also currently completing her Bachelor of Health Services Management at Ryerson University this spring. Her passion lies in Evaluation, Project Management and Continuous Quality Improvement.

Spirometry Interpretation

Anna Day (MD, FRCPC) is a Respirologist and Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. She served as Physician-in-Chief, Women’s College Hospital and then Sunnybrook and Women’s College Health Sciences Centre from 1991 to 1999.  She is currently Chair of Continuing Education for the Division of Respirology and Director of the Gender and Airways Program at Women’s College Hospital. Her clinical focus and research is in the area of gender and pulmonary health, with a focus on both the psychosocial and biological factors contributing to gender differences in asthma and smoking related pulmonary disease.
