Learning Objectives

By the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

  • Clarify and state the role of spirometry as an objective measurement of lung disease
  • Review spirometry testing, terms and measurements
  • Identify the criteria for best test acceptability/repeatability
  • Gain confidence in the interpretation of spirometry through case study practice

Spirometry Ins and Outs:

Ms. Ana McPherson, MASc, RRT, CRE/CTE,SFI – RespTrec/SpiroTrec Facilitator

Clinical Coordinator, South Simcoe Northern York Region Health Link. Ana has over 25 years experience in healthcare that encompasses acute/primary/community  care, chronic disease management, diagnostic, research, quality improvement , with public and private sectors. Ana has  had the pleasure of working with all age groups from  neonates in the NICU at  Women’s College hospital to the geriatrics  at the Barrie Community FHT, Pulmonary Rehab Program.  But she was most privileged to work with the First Nations community at Sioux Lookout, Northern Ontario, as far as Bearskin Lake.

Spirometry Interpretation:

Dr. Itamar E. Tamari, MD, CCFP, FCFP has been working at Stonegate Community Health Centre since 1998 and is on staff at St. Joseph's Health Centre. Dr. Tamari completed his doctorate in Medicine at the University of Toronto in 1992 and his training in Family Medicine in 1994. Dr. Tamari is the Medical Director of the Primary Care Asthma Program, which is one of the Asthma Plan of Action (APA) projects, and has chaired it’s Advisory since 2002. He sits on the Ontario Lung Association's Provider Education Program Steering Committee and the Asthma Advisory Committee. He is also a founding member of the Primary Care Respiratory Alliance of Canada.
