Learning Objectives

By the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify symptoms of COPD
  • Identify individuals at risk for COPD by screening
  • Advocate that smoking cessation works
  • List the key components of a COPD management plan
  • Correctly complete two COPD case studies by applying the CTS COPD Guidelines

Dr. Alan Kaplan, CCFP (EM), FCFP is a Family physician practicing in Richmond Hill. He graduated from University of Toronto in 1983. He is Past-Chief of Family Practice and Past Chief of the Emergency Department at York Central hospital and currently a Hospitalist at Brampton Civic Hospital.   He is the Chairperson of the Family Physician Asthma Group of Canada, the Chairperson of the Communities of Practice Section on Respiratory Medicine of the College of Family Physicians of Canada, a board member on the International Primary Care Respiratory Group and Chair of the Council for Organizing Members of the Canadian Network for Respiratory Care. Dr. Kaplan was the President of the IPCRG 5th biennual world scientific meeting, past member of the Canadian Consensus Guidelines for Asthma, COPD and Sinusitis and is an international editor for the International Primary Care Respiratory Journal. He is a member of the Health Canada Section on Allergy and Respiratory therapies, and member of Chronic Respiratory Disease Surveillance Advisory Committee (Public Health Agency of Canada).
