New Year’s brings resolutions and opportunities for positive change. For many people, the wish to quit smoking tops the list. Beginning February 1st, the Ontario Lung Association is partnering with GoodLife Fitness to offer support for both members and non-members who want to get fit by making the commitment to be smoke-free. Quit & Get Fit! will integrate quit plans and support into sessions with specially-trained GoodLife personal trainers, at select locations in Ontario. Physical activity can play an important role in the quitting process by helping to reduce cravings, manage body weight and relieve stress, all of which contribute to a general feeling of well-being.

Quit & Get Fit!, an initiative of the Ontario Lung Association, is one of three that make up a collaboration between the Ontario Lung Association, the Canadian Cancer Society Smokers’ Helpline and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario to help Ontarians who wish to quit smoking. Supported by the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion, these three organizations are working together to reach and provide support to young adults -- the population with the highest prevalence of smoking.

Other supporting initiatives include the Canadian Cancer Society Driven to Quit Challenge, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s www.iwillsucceed.ca, a one-stop, on-line resource of key cessation supports available in Ontario, including links to the recently launched Canadian Cancer Society Smokers’ Helpline Text Messaging.
